Book Summary: Rasikānanda

Thrilled to announce the release of Rasikānanda, an unpublished yet profoundly insightful treatise on Rasa theory by the esteemed scholar Āśādhara Bhaṭṭa, composer of more than 20 works, most of them are independent text of various fields, few of them are commentaries of Kiratarjuniya, Bhusanakarika etc. This work, long awaited by scholars of Sanskrit aesthetics, has now been meticulously brought to light through the critical edition of Dr. Srimanta Bhadra, a distinguished expert in Vyākaraṇa and textual criticism. The book has been published by Central Sanskrit University, Delhi and was officially unveiled at the valedictory session of the 51st All India Oriental Conference on 26th October 2024.

About the Text

Rasa theory, the cornerstone of Sanskrit aesthetics, explores the deep emotional and artistic experience that arises in literary and dramatic compositions. Rasikānanda sheds new light on this theory, delving into nuances that refine and redefine earlier interpretations. Āśādhara Bhaṭṭa’s work presents critical observations and intricate arguments that offer fresh perspectives on the interrelationship between rasa, bhāva, and aesthetic enjoyment especially on Bhakti Rasa in classical Indian thought.

The Editor’s Contribution

This edition has been critically edited from two manuscripts received from Oriental Research Institute Vadodara and B J Institute, Ahmedabad by Dr. Srimanta Bhadra, whose expertise in manuscript editing and Sanskrit grammar ensures both textual fidelity and scholarly precision. His meticulous approach preserves the authenticity of the original text while providing insightful annotations, cross-references, and an academic foreword that contextualizes Rasikānanda within the broader landscape of Sanskrit literary criticism.

Significance of the Publication

With its unveiling at one of the most prestigious conferences in Oriental Studies, Rasikānanda is poised to become a landmark contribution to Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) and classical aesthetics. This publication is an essential addition for researchers, students, and enthusiasts of Sanskrit poetics, promising to deepen scholarly discourse on Rasa theory and its enduring legacy.
